There are many materials and strategies available for teaching basic concepts such as number, shape and color identification. Students with intellectual disabilities and autism are most successful with programs that are both simple and highly repetitious.
The school I taught at used the Edmark Reading Program for reading instruction, and I found it to be by far the best program for my students. Using the Edmark Reading Program’s strategy of introducing one word at a time and then repeating that word as new words were introduced was highly effective. I decided to try the same approach with other concepts, and got the same great results!
